Dundee Liberal Democrats support calls for Green Budget

9 Dec 2006

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Saturday 9th December) supported calls by MPs for financial incentives to reduce emissions.

Westminster's cross-party Environmental Audit Committee has called on the Treasury to take action to help curb greenhouse gas emissions by imposing penalties on those who do not reduce their emissions.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said, "We should tax pollution and not people. Labour has cut green taxes steadily since 1999, which is why carbon emissions are rising, especially from cars and planes. The Tories are just a shambles on green taxes. They are all mouth and no trousers on this issue, and Mr Osborne's efforts to jump on the bandwagon are laughable."

Locally, Dundee Liberal Democrat councillor Helen Dick added, "Gordon Brown should be putting climate change at the heart of his policies. Its vital that there's a genuinely green budget. Labour has been ignoring this issue for far too long."
