Dundee LibDems say news on climate change requires urgent action

30 Aug 2006

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Wednesday 30th August) said that new research showing that climate change was making Spring come earlier highlighted the need for urgent and decisive action on the issue.

This follows news that scientists from 17 countries reviewed 125,000 reports for a Europe-wide study which concluded that the season was beginning between six to eight days earlier than 30 years ago, when average temperatures in Europe were cooler.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP, said,

"This latest research once again highlights the need for quick, decisive action to tackle climate change.

"Only the Liberal Democrats are proposing the kind of policies that would make a serious difference in tackling this vital issue."

Locally, Dundee LibDem party secretary Michael Charlton said, "The need for action now on Green issues is vital.

"Only the Liberal Democrats plans to cut income tax by 2p in the pound, and switch to green taxes instead, so the more people switch to greener living, the more of the tax cut they keep.

"Greener living would help tackle the huge issue of climate change," concluded Mr Charlton.
