SNP class sizes policy "in total disarray", say Dundee Liberal Democrats2.25.55pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 24th May 2008
Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Saturday 24th May) backed comments by LibDem Shadow Education Secretary, Jeremy Purvis MSP, who has described the SNP's process of implementing its class size policy as being in "total disarray". Speaking after experts voiced doubts about the SNP's class size policy to a meeting of the Education Committee, Mr Purvis said, "The Liberal Democrats committed to recruiting 1,000 additional teachers in Scotland to bring down class sizes across primary and secondary schools. This proposal is supported by the teachers' union, the EIS. "This evidence session confirmed my fears that as well as there being no funding to deliver the SNP's class size policy, there is no reliable way of monitoring its implementation." Here in Dundee, LibDem councillor for Strathmartine Ward, Cllr Helen Dick, added, "The research from an education centre at the University of Glasgow casts clear doubt on the sense and viability of the SNP government's class size policy."
