Cllr Fraser Macpherson welcomes City Centre Safety Works

Dundee City Centre Councillor Fraser Macpherson today welcomed news that the City Council is to undertake a series of safety measures in the City Centre to improve pedestrian safety.

The Council is shortly to undertake the measures at the junction of Murraygate/High Street with Commercial Street where there have been concerns raised about pedestrian safety. The proposals are extensive, high quality and impressive and include:

  • Improved pedestrian approach with a tactile surface to assist the visually impaired and uplighters to make the pedestrian crossing area clearer in the evenings.

  • Street furniture to 'channel' pedestrians to the crossing area.

  • Coloured asphalt at vehicle entry to the crossing area and a rippled surface after entry - a "rumble strip" - to make the crossing area not just obvious to drivers but physically encourage slow speed.

  • Improved signage including "SLOW" coloured signs on the road surface, plus simplified road signage.

Fraser said - "There have been a lot of concerns expressed about the junction and I am very pleased the Council is bringing forward proposals to make the junction safer for pedestrians."

Fraser also welcomed news that the crossing at South Marketgait is to be improved, with new signals and a larger central waiting area being created.

"These are important measures to improve safety for Dundonians and they are greatly welcomed," concluded Fraser.
